New
Nepal
-Siddhicharan
Shrestha
The poem "New Nepal" was written by Nepali poet Shiddhicharan Shrestha and it was translated by Shreedhar Lohani. Siddhicharan was a revolutionary writer of the time. He was sentenced for 18 years in prison and his properties were also confiscated by the then autocratic Rana regime. However, he was released after five years. He was a then political prisoner. Siddhicharan was not even allowed to attain his father’s funeral while in jail. The sentence was rigorous.
It
is a political poem. The poem voices a strong call for Nepalese to raise above
the inequalities of the past and brings in a resurgence of freedom and human
dignity. He has expressed the feelings, problems and pathos of common Nepalese
people. So, the poem reflects the society too.
The
poet has used very simple and clear dictions in the poem. Political systems
have been changed time and again. Nepalese people have involved in the to
change the systems with sweet dreams but the condition remains constant. The
gap between richer and poorer in increasing. Superstitions, discrimination,
divisions, corruptions are rooted deeply in Nepalese society. Along with political changes, the dreams and
hopes of common Nepalese people are changing but the condition of the country
remains constant. Only handful of people are grasping the opportunity.
The
poet encourages us to arise, and to wake up. He reminds the freedom. He asks all
Nepalese to speak truth. He inspires to be changed in New Nepal. He suggests
not to follow distasteful rituals, heartless class divisions, false belief, untouchability,
poverty, and chain of discrimination.
He
inspires to the public people to change the Nepal by transforming from Old
Nepal to New Nepal. This all is possible if we unite and destroy all such evil
elements. So, to make new Nepal we should change our social, economic,
cultural, religious, and political condition.
